The Issue In Refrigeration

So what makes the average refrigeration unit so wasteful? The central problem is that most systems are set to maintain a particular temperature via a thermostat, with the compressor unit of the fridge is cycled on and off to maintain it.

This seems sensible. But what really needs to be maintained – the air temperature of the air in the cabinet, or the food temperature itself?

Importantly, the two are quite different, and are maintained differently, too. More specifically, the thermodynamic properties of solid food differ substantially from that of air. So whilst the air in your fridges may be above the preset temperature, the food might well not be.

Much of the work expended by your standard refrigeration unit is therefore wasted in trying to keep cool food that is still at the desired temperature.

The CUES Solution
